Large-scale human development has led to the fragmentation of Canada’s freshwater systems, with infrastructure acting as barriers to the natural flow and connectivity of streams and rivers.

    In recent years, Yukon First Nations have severely restricted Chinook salmon harvesting due to low fish numbers. Now, a study has found only a third of tagged upper Yukon River Chinook salmon are making it past the fish ladder near Whitehorse to swim upstream and spawn.

    2020 was a solid year for chum salmon returns in West Van’s creeks, according to the local stream stewardship group. Volunteers from the West Vancouver Streamkeepers Society counted 307 spawning chum salmon in 2020 – up from the record low 85 the year before. The group made their annual presentation to West Vancouver council on Monday night.
