Canada's Last 20%

Canada is down to the last 20 per cent of its native grasslands. These landscapes still support grassland birds, pollinators, Swift Foxes and other wildlife, but they continue to shrink under pressure from land conversion, roads, fences, development and other land-use changes.

From a distance, grasslands can seem quiet or ordinary, but they are full of life. These open landscapes provide nesting areas, shelter and feeding habitat for wildlife that cannot simply move elsewhere when grasslands disappear.

Today, only about 20 per cent of Canada’s native grasslands remain. What is left matters deeply for species at risk and for the health of broader prairie ecosystems.

Grasslands are also working lands where people grow food and earn a living. That means conservation solutions must be practical, science-based and grounded in collaboration with the people who know these landscapes best.

The Canadian Wildlife Federation is working to support conservation leadership, practical habitat conservation and partnerships that help keep remaining grasslands intact for wildlife and people.

Canada’s remaining native grasslands still hold life, possibility and value, but only if we act while there is still time to make a difference.
