Welcome,

The Nanaimo and District Fish & Game Protective Association Receives the 2009 CWF Doug Clarke Memorial Award

Bob Morris and CWF President Larry Leigh

The Nanaimo and District Fish & Game Protective Association is the recipient of the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Doug Clarke Memorial Award for their work on the Millstone River By-Pass Channel in Bowen Park.

The Millstone River By-Channel is an 800-metre long side-channel that provides Coho salmon and other fish the opportunity to migrate above Deadman’s waterfalls in British Columbia. This project was the final of three that took place to provide the fish with an alternate spawning route. Since the completion of the channel past Deadman’s falls, the fish in the area have been reintroduced to a safe habitat, on the way to the long term goal of providing a self-sustaining Coho run in the Millstone River.

The Canadian Wildlife Federation introduced the Doug Clarke Memorial Award in 1982 in memory of Dr. C.H.D. “Doug” Clarke. Dr. Clarke devoted his career to the philosophy, science and art of wildlife management throughout the world. At the time of his death in 1981, he was a director of the Canadian Wildlife Federation. This award is presented to a CWF affiliate for the most outstanding conservation project completed during the previous year by the affiliate, its clubs, or its members.

“CWF’s Award Program recognizes the excellent work for wildlife being carried out across our country,” said Wade Luzny, CWF Executive Vice-President.  “We are thrilled with the depth and magnitude of all the nominations we receive. These awards are one way to pay tribute to what so many people have made their life work — to ensure our natural heritage remains for future generations.”

The CWF Conservation Achievement Awards comprises of six categories and honour an individual or an organization’s commitment to wildlife in Canada.  Nominees include volunteers, professionals, youth and conservationists from all walks of life concerned with a host of environmental topics.
