Bioblitz
To help us determine the health of an ecosystem, we can use Bioblitzes. A Bioblitz is a participatory search for species within a limited area and a limited timeframe that takes a “snapshot” of as many living things as possible. People from all walks of life help out — expert and amateur naturalists, taxonomic scientists and the general public. Here’s the key part: you can be directly involved in determining the health of an area by participating in — or hosting — a Bioblitz!
Canadian Conservation Corps
The CWF Canadian Conservation Corps is a three part program designed to deeply engage young Canadians in our natural and cultural heritage through service, adventure and reflection. We recruit young people (ages 18 to 30) and engage them over a nine-month period in a comprehensive program that progresses from wilderness journeys to field work, culminating with participants leading meaningful community service program in their own communities across Canada.
iNaturalist
If enough people record their observations in iNaturalist Canada, we can make a difference for Canada’s wildlife. We can build a living record of life in Canada that scientists and environmental managers can use to monitor changes in biodiversity, and that anyone can use to learn more about Canada’s amazing natural history.
Love Your Lake
Love Your Lake — a joint program between the Canadian Wildlife Federation and Watersheds Canada — invites lake associations and organizations to volunteer their lake as a participant in the program. If accepted, every property on the lake will be assessed using a standardized assessment protocol, and landowners will get a personalized property report with details on the state of their shoreline and recommended actions for improving lake health for people and wildlife.
Non-formal Education Partnerships
Non-formal Education partnerships at CWF engage existing canadian youth organizations, local NGOs and communities outside the traditional school system in specific projects together to foster environmental stewardship, increase biodiversity knowledge, and provide hands-on experience and service-learning to their members.
Wild Futures
Wild Futures is a CWF Non-formal education program for young people that informs youth about and galvanizes them to consider green jobs, conservation/environmental/outdoor career opportunities and opens their eyes to a sector and the industries that they may not know as much about. This program has various facets to help youth discover the many possible careers available in conservation and green skills.
WILD Outside
WILD Outside is a national conservation-based leadership program and is open year-round to youth ages 13 to 18 in various communities acorss Canada. It’s a fun, educational, accessable extracurricular program where youth can join small groups and participate in a variety of conservation-themed activities, meet new friends and discover an appreciation for the outdoors in a safe, and structured environment. Learning from community volunteers and alongside their peers, youth will connect with local partners in the planning and delivery of community-based conservation action projects, allowing them to have a direct impact on conservation in their community while enjoing time in the outdoors! Participation also counts toward other youth achievement initiatives they may pursue.
