Wind power is one of the world's fastest growing renewable energy sources. At the end of 2006, The Global Wind Energy Council ranked Canada 12th in the world for total installed wind power capacity, with just less than 1,500 megawatts of power. On average, it takes 16 kilometres per hour winds to generate enough power to create electricity from a wind turbine. Though some areas of Canada are better suited to wind power than others, average wind speeds are well above what's needed: Between 14 and 20 km/h over land and 29 to 32 km/h over water.
