As former Mayor of Yellowknife, Gordon is regularly involved in many conservation initiatives. He was a National Director of the Junior Forest Wardens, chairs the Fly Kid Foundation and initiated Northwest Territories funding programs including one for off-stream pickerel rearing and another for studies of invasive species and the impact of their parasites in new habitat. Previously active with Alberta Wildlife Federation and Ducks Unlimited, his energies are currently devoted to enhancing the N.W.T. Wildlife Federation. Gordon is married to Carol and they have three children and seven grandchildren.
