Q & A
Chantel Hancock

Hometown:
Hamilton, ON
What conservation issue is closest to your heart?
Coming from a small town situated right beside Lake Simcoe, I have always been very passionate about the conservation of water. Not only for human health reasons, but for the many threatened species that require our help in conserving our water bodies.
What are you hoping to learn from CCC?
I expect that this is going to be a very exciting adventure from start to finish. I am expecting to learn a lot more about conservation in Canada, as well as I hope to learn a lot more about myself and my capabilities.
Who/what inspired you to care about conservation?
The first person who truly inspired me to continue my education in environment studies and conservation was one of my high school teachers, Mr. Gaynik. He is an incredible leader not only as a teacher, but as an environmentalist.
If you could sit down with anyone in the world and have tea or coffee, who would it be? And why?
Without a doubt, it would be David Attenborough.

My Experience So Far

West Coast Shuffle

Stage 1

Departing from beautiful Tofino in Clayoquot Sound, British Columbia, the Canadian Conservation Corps cohorts in Group 9 will be enjoying 14 days of outdoor adventure. During their trip the CCC members will be honing their camping and outdoor skills while developing their paddling skills during a sea kayaking trip along B.C.’s Pacific coast. If the right conditions persist, Group 9 will also be incorporating a visit to the Cedar Coast Field Station, assisting in the collection of samples and contributing to a micro-plastics survey in the Sound and participating in real conservation activities.

Conservation Field Learning

Stage 2

Location: Quebec

Hosting Organization: Kanauk Institute

Description:
Those completing their field learning experiences working with the Kenauk Institute are expected to juggle a variety of responsibilities including contributing to multiple research projects, helping organize day-to-day operations, as well as contributing to our educational programs. The field experience gained during this internship is invaluable and will help individuals narrow down their scientific/research interests, as well as help them pursue their academic and career goals.

Timeline: July 8 – Sept 27
