Local Enhancement & Appreciation of Forests � LEAF � is a Toronto-based, non-profit group that is dedicated to protecting Toronto's urban forest. Started in 1997, the goals are to raise public awareness of the value of our urban forest and to actively involve individual property owners in urban forest stewardship. Approximately 85% of Toronto's urban forest is rooted in private property. Through a Backyard Tree Planting Program, LEAF offers subsidized native tree plantings to property owners within the City of Toronto. The program prioritizes one-on-one consultation with homeowners with an emphasis on getting the right tree in the right place. Toronto residents with adequate space in their backyard qualify for the program. Cost to homeowners ranges from $35.00 to $85.00 and includes on-site advice and planting service. A variety of native shrubs are also available. Please note that we are not a landscaping company or nursery. Residents who decide to get a tree through LEAF are participants in a project who commit to caring for their tree to help improve our environment. The program is available to school and multi-unit properties as well. LEAF hosts the Urban Forest Network � a network of concerned citizens, professionals in related fields, and members of a variety of groups from across Ontario. The members have come together through the Urban Forest Network to share resources and information and to address urban forest issues that affect us all in order to strengthen our voice and improve our efforts. It's free to join the network. Members receive an electronic newsletter.
