Widespread throughout the world, in Canada, the black-crowned night heron can be found in southern Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as New Brunswick and small areas of southern Ontario and Quebec.

This juvenile black-crowned night heron may have multiple parents, because adult herons do not interact exclusively with their own young, and often raise chicks that are not biologically their own.

Although it can feed by day, this species feeds mostly at dusk or night, thriving on a diet of fish, lizards, eggs, rodents and other small invertebrates. It will also eat the young of other birds such as terns and ibises. Young birds are known to expel their last meal if frightened or disturbed, thus making the study of their diet relatively easy, albeit unappetizing.
