Marine Mammals Survey

Canadian waters are rich in whales, more than 30 species inhabiting the country’s oceans.

Almost every species is threatened or endangered. Here are some of the issues affecting marine mammals:

  • Entanglement in commercial fishing gear

  • Ship strikes (i.e., collisions by ships with marine mammals)

  • Limited knowledge of the locations and movement patterns of whales

  • Increased underwater noise pollution  

  • Loss of and changes to sources of food which can limit or diminish populations
