Q & A
Kay Madère

Hometown:
Ottawa, Ontario
What conservation issue is closest to your heart?
I think some of the biggest would be water pollution and security. Food security. Habitat degradation for agricultural purposes. Single-use plastics.
What are you hoping to learn from CCC?
My expectations going into this program will be to learn a lot of valuable skills I can apply to my future career as well as the hands-on skills during fieldwork placements. I’m also looking forward to the networking opportunities.
Who/what inspired you to care about conservation?
As a kid I was always outside. I was lucky to have parents that always took us on adventures all the time and my favourite memories were always associated with being outside. As I got older I started to understand the threats to Canadian wildlife. I knew I wanted to be working outside with plants and animals.
If you could sit down with anyone in the world and have tea or coffee, who would it be? And why?
Bear Grylls because I would absolutely question all his practices.

My Experience So Far

West Coast Shuffle

Stage 1

Departing from beautiful Tofino in Clayoquot Sound, British Columbia, the Canadian Conservation Corps cohorts in Group 9 will be enjoying 14 days of outdoor adventure. During their trip the CCC members will be honing their camping and outdoor skills while developing their paddling skills during a sea kayaking trip along B.C.’s Pacific coast. If the right conditions persist, Group 9 will also be incorporating a visit to the Cedar Coast Field Station, assisting in the collection of samples and contributing to a micro-plastics survey in the Sound and participating in real conservation activities.

Conservation Field Learning

Stage 2

Location: Yukon, NWT

Hosting Organization: Chinook Salmon Aquatic Field Technician

Description: Chinook Salmon Aquatic Field Technician Description of work: The field technician will assist with field research for a project studying Chinook salmon migration. This will include capturing and tracking Chinook salmon in the Yukon River near Whitehorse, YT. Duties may include constructing and maintaining field equipment, and assisting with public events and education programs. The goals of the research project are to increase our knowledge of where salmon spawn throughout the Yukon River near Whitehorse and provide critical information on the effectiveness of passage structures at dams on the Yukon River. By working with local First Nations governments and industry the project will develop strong partnerships that will help make future recovery actions possible.
