You’ll be pleased to know that you are not the only person this has happened to and that there is a way to get this critter back outside. One thing to remember is that this squirrel does not want to be in your house and is anxious to get back outside.
First you want to try and contain the squirrel to that one room. If it’s in the kitchen, close the doors to all other rooms in your house and, if possible, block off any access points to the rest of the house. If the squirrel is in a bedroom, simply close the bedroom door.
If there is a door in your kitchen that leads outside, open it. Otherwise, open the closest window. If the window is high and the squirrel can’t easily reach it, make stairs out of boxes or something similar so that the squirrel can easily access the window.
If the squirrel is in an area of your house that doesn’t have a door or window that opens, you will need to create a pathway out of boxes or something similar to guide the squirrel to the closest door or window.
Turn off all radios TVs and anything else that is making noise. You will have to leave the room for the squirrel to feel comfortable enough to leave. Also remove any pets. It would also be beneficial to remove any possible food sources that the squirrel could enjoy—after all, there’s no reason to give the squirrel an incentive to stick around! If you want to ensure the squirrel has left, sprinkle some baking flour on the window sill or on the bottom of the doorway. If you see footprints in the flour leading outside— congratulations, your home is now squirrel free!
