Canada is loaded with habitats: wildlife havens where wolverines prowl, bats swoop, insects buzz, and reptiles slither. It’s important to know what’s happening with habitats in your area. If a habitat is unhealthy it affects all the organisms living within them – even you! You can assess your ecozone’s general vitality and even prescribe “treatments” to help them get better.

What is an ecozone?
Wildlife and ecosystems ignore geographical boundaries. To make it easier to study the vast diversity of natural communities in Canada, scientists have divided the country into 15 terrestrial ecozones.

What’s YOUR ecozone?
Look at the map below. Which ecozone is your home located in? Try out the ecozone quiz for your region. How did you do? Why not try all of the ecozone quizzes to learn about Canada’s terrain – every space from east to west!

Ask around.
Do a little research. Talk to naturalists, biologists, teachers and other knowledgeable people. Check out magazines, newspapers and government publications. Is your ecozone mostly urban? Rural? What was it like before people came to live on it? Were there more forests, grasslands, or natural areas back then?
