This nursery was established in June 1999 by the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority’s Native Prairie Stewardship Program and is now co-managed by the Native Plant Society of Saskatchewan.
The nursery is intended to preserve some of the genetic diversity of the prairie plants that once covered the clay soils of the Regina Plain, of which only 7 per cent remain. All of the plants in the nursery were grown from seeds collected in the few prairie parcels that remain in the Regina Plain Landscape Area. Seed collected from these plots will be used for future native prairie restoration projects in the Regina Plain and other areas of the province.
Schools and other non-profit organizations are encouraged to request free seeds for schoolyard and other restoration projects, and volunteers to help tend the nursery are welcome.
