Wildlife planning is an essential part of urban planning. If it isn't practised in your community, maybe you can help introduce it. Draw up a list of urban planning guidelines to present to your local council. You can also make the list available to homeowners. Here are some guidelines:
• Consult with a wildlife biologist at all stages of planning and development.
• Enlist an expert to help take wildlife inventory and record any other relevant information on wildlife.
• When selecting plants for landscaping or replacement, enlist the help of wildlife biologists, horticulturists, and landscape architects to choose a mixture of native species.
• Plan land developments with a view to respecting and potentially improving the areas around lakes, rivers, and ponds.
• When developing new urban communities or rehabilitating old ones, maintain the natural state of land-forms, vegetation, and topsoil as much as you can.
• Identify any area in the community that needs special attention.
