If you want to help local wildlife, it is important to view your backyard from a perspective that takes wildlife needs into account. If you enjoy a hands-on approach you can jump right into one (or more!) of the wildlife projects found on this site. If you prefer to strategize first you might develop a backyard habitat action plan. Draw a map of your existing yard. This will help you to figure out which elements of wildlife habitat you have and which are missing. An action plan is an effective and organized way of attracting the wildlife species you wish to see.
Be Realistic
Before you get too far in your planning, you must decide what kind of wildlife you want to attract. Be realistic - don’t expect to see moose in a downtown backyard! Pick four or five species of wild animals found in your area and construct your plan with their needs in mind. Find out what kinds of plants provide their favourite food and shelter. The plants should be native to your area. What are their soil, light, and water needs?
