Saturna Island — named for a Spanish schooner that explored the area in the 18th century — is part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. Established in 2003, the reserve protects at-risk natural regions in B.C.’s unique southern Gulf Islands archipelago. It covers both terrestrial and marine habitat, creating living space for species ranging from orcas and sea lions to shorebirds and seabirds.
