Starlings are not native to Canada and they can certainly take over our suet feeders. Here are some ways to keep starlings away from your suet feeder so you’re not needing to re-fill it every day!
- Use a suet feeder with a metal wire shield. Smaller birds will still be able to get inside the shield to feed on the suet, even larger woodpeckers should be able to access the suet with their long beaks, but starlings won’t be able to access the food.
- You can try an upside down suet feeder. Starlings may still be able to feed from this feeder but it seems to be more of a challenge for them.
- You can also turn your regular suet holder into an upside down suet feeder by placing the suet holder below a squirrel baffle. Again, starlings will only be able to access the suet from the bottom which they are less willing to do.
These are some tricks that have worked for some people and will hopefully work for you! Happy bird feeding!
